INGREDIENTS

Basic ingredients

  • 2 cups tomato sauce no salt added
  • ½ cup cider vinegar
  • cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup tomato paste no salt added
  • ¼ cup molasses

Spices

  • 1 tbsp liquid smoke
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp ground mustard
  • ¼ tsp ground cumin
  • ¼ tsp ground black pepper
  • ¼ tsp allspice
  • ¼ tsp cocoa powder
  • tsp ground cinnamon
  • tsp ground cayenne pepper (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Combine all the ingredients in a saucepan.
  • Bring to a boil over high heat and simmer half-covered over medium heat for 15 to 20 minutes until it gets thicker. Stir the sauce occasionally while cooking.
  • Let cool completely and store in the refrigerator in an airtight container.

NOTES

Note 1 - Crushed tomato sauce
It is possible to use crushed tomato sauce instead of tomato sauce. The difference is that crushed tomato sauce usually contains only tomato while tomato sauce already contains spices like onion and garlic powder. On the other hand, the texture could be a little less smooth.
Note 2 - Volume
This recipe makes approximately 625 ml (2-1/2 cups) of BBQ sauce.
